Correct a Curved Back or Bad Posture...With Clothes!

Struggle with Scoliosis or simply bad posture? I do too! In fact, one my greatest frustrations is seeing photos others take of me when I’m not prepared for them; rather than seeing me laughing or singing or whatever, I see me slouching! Ugh!

If you’ve ever had back problems, you know that straightening up isn’t exactly the answer. It can cause a lot of back pain if done over an extended period of time. And, for some, it is impossible to do!

So, is there a method for disguising slumped shoulders? There certainly is! Now, this is no reason not to keep going to the chiropractor or working toward better posture, but it will certainly keep grandma’s nagging away!



Flattering Choices:

Wear shirts and jackets with collars!  They add girth to the back of your neck, thereby lessening the protrusion of your back in relation to your neck.


Fuzzy collars or cowl necked sweaters and shirts are very flattering!



Layering a maxi dress over a t-shirt provides enough interest away from the shape of your back to give you grace and beauty!


Wear your hair down or in a low ponytail or chignon, once again adding balance between the base of your head and the curved spine!


Less Flattering Choices:

Tight shirts that do not have collars to detract from your curved back shouldn't be worn as they outline your bad posture.



Low-backed shirts that show more than regular shirts are definite 'no-no's.  They leave your skin wide open just where you're trying to detract attention.  Pay attention when you shop!  What looks good on a mannequin with perfect posture might now hang the same on you!

  1. These are great tips! However, wearing the right type of clothes, as how you said it, is a mere disguise. Practicing good posture is the most obvious, best solution yet. According to chiropractors, good posture not only improves your image, but it also increases concentration, facilitates breathing, and avoid health complications. Engaging in exercises would help, but it’s always best to get professional assessment before engaging into any activities.***Willow Laflamme***

  2. I agree. Great advice. For those with scoliosis like me, however, sometimes great posture isn't something you can obtain as easily. But, no need to feel bad about our bodies either! :-)
